The History of Chamoy

Chamoy actually originated in China and was introduced to Mexico by Chinese and Filipino immigrants through li hing, a dried plum seasoning that is sweet, salty, and sour. This influence dates back to the Manila Galleon trade (1565-1815), which connected Asia, the Americas, and Europe.

In Mexico, these pickled fruits were adapted with locally available ingredients. The addition of chili peppers and lime juice gave chamoy its distinctive sweet, sour, and spicy flavor.
