The Zen of Hokkaido Milk Bread

Meet our Japanese Rose Hokkaido Milk Bread—a collaboration with our baker that’s pure magic in every slice. This bread builds on the legendary softness of Hokkaido Milk Bread - a perfectly rectangular loaf with barely a hint of crust that has a milky-sweet flavor and a feathery soft texture that tears into wispy strands and melts in your mouth. We’ve elevated this classic by folding in Japanese rose petals, giving the loaf a lovely pink hue and a gentle, intoxicating aroma.

This pillowy-soft bread is a beloved breakfast staple in Japan, usually enjoyed sliced extra thick, lightly toasted, and served with a touch of butter.

A History of Shokupan

Hokkaido Milk Bread, also known as Shokupan, has a storied history rooted in Japanese baking tradition.

Originating in the 20th century, this bread became popular for its incredibly soft, fluffy texture, which is achieved through a unique technique called Tangzhong. This method involves cooking a portion of the flour and water into a paste, which is then incorporated into the dough to enhance its moisture and softness.

Originally inspired by Western milk breads, Hokkaido Milk Bread was perfected in Japan, becoming a staple for its milky-sweet flavor and delicate crumb. The bread's airy texture and rich taste have made it a beloved favorite across Asia and beyond, cherished for its melt-in-your-mouth quality.

Size and Shipping

Each loaf is 4” by 7” and 4.5” tall.

Each order is freshly baked to order. In hot weather or when shipping to warm locations, rolls are packed with an ice pack to maintain optimal temperature during transit. It's normal for the ice pack to fully melt, and the rolls will still be safe to enjoy upon arrival.

Judge us by our looks

Our packaging is safe, simple, and proudly no frills. We don't think it makes sense to pay for things you throw away immediately.

That's why the Japanese Rose Hokkaido Milk Bread ships in the same protective packaging the manufacturer uses, covered in functional stickers and foreign stamps showing the journey it's been on.

We don't hide it and wear it as a badge of honor for the places our products have been and the people who made them.
