A Modernist Experiment in Suspension

Originally introduced in the early 1980s, this design came from a moment when domestic furniture was becoming lighter, more architectural, and increasingly influenced by industrial materials. Instead of heavy wood rails and enclosed silhouettes, the structure is reduced to continuous bent steel lines that appear to float around the mattress rather than contain it.

The result still feels surprisingly current: graphic, restrained, and intentionally exposed.

• Inspired by 1980s Scandinavian tubular steel design
• Floating profile with exposed perimeter frame
• Raised mattress presentation without visual bulk
• Works especially well in monochrome and minimal interiors
• Quietly architectural from every angle

Materials

Stainless Steel Frame
Formed from polished stainless steel tubing with continuous bends and exposed geometry. The open rail structure gives the bed its distinctive floating appearance while adding subtle reflectivity to the room.

Carbon Steel Platform
A rigid steel sleeping platform sits beneath the mattress to provide stable support while keeping the overall profile visually thin and lightweight.

Design

Less bed frame, more line drawing.

• Tubular rails create a perimeter rather than a traditional headboard and footboard.
• Elevated mattress proportions make the bed feel lighter in the room.
• Open negative space underneath enhances the architectural silhouette.
• Continuous steel lines emphasize proportion over ornament.
• Originally conceived during the shift toward softer modernist interiors in the early 1980s.

Tubular Modernism

The exposed steel geometry references a period when furniture began borrowing visual language from industrial design and architecture.

Floating Effect

By minimizing visual mass below the mattress, the bed appears suspended rather than grounded.

Built Around the Mattress

The rails frame the sleeping surface instead of enclosing it, creating a cleaner and more open profile.

Graphic From Every Angle

Strong horizontal lines give the piece presence without relying on bulk or decorative detailing.
